Hi, I'm Chris, a PhD chemist, professional tutor and founder of EPOC Education.

I've been tutoring for over 7 years, with hundreds of hours helping A-level Chemistry students build their understanding, improve their exam technique and approach difficult topics with more confidence.

I initially tutored alongside my studies and research. As I gained more experience working with students, I started to notice that many of the difficulties they had with Chemistry weren't necessarily because the subject was too difficult, but because they were being taught so much of it as information to memorise. 

This was something I could relate to myself. 

As a student, I often found that science was taught as a catalogue of facts, which worked reasonably well when exams were more focused on recalling individual topics. But when I went on to study Chemistry, Biology and Maths at University, I found that this approach didn't work nearly as well when questions demanded deeper understanding and application.

That experience shaped the way I approached tutoring. I wanted to give students the ability to understand and deduce Chemistry from first principles, rather than simply memorising disconnected facts.

Naturally, there are aspects such as naming and specific cases that simply need to be memorised, and at the end of the day we do just need to match the mark scheme. But that becomes much more achievable when students have a strong understanding of the underlying Chemistry.

My aim is to bring a community of students and tutors together, with useful resources all in one place. Clear explanations, cheat sheets, exam tips, quizzes and personalised tutoring, all focused on building real understanding and confidence, so students can walk out of exams feeling proud and able to build on a stronger foundation for whatever their next steps may be.
